The smallest Balearic island main is less than 5 km south of Ibiza and is completely flat, excluding the eastern part where small hills up to 200 feet high overlook above the sea.
Formentera is reached only by boat from Ibiza, San Antonio etc.. Due to the lack of an airport.
The distance from Ibiza is about 30 minutes.
On Formentera you can find untouched nature, quiet and clean beaches and bike paths to explore the island.
The name derives from the Latin word frumentum Formentera, which recalls the importance it represents for the agricultural supply.
In the last century then Formentera has become one of the favorite locations hippie communities across Europe, without which the island has experienced the frantic race to the mass tourism that has occurred on other Balearic more like Ibiza and Majorca.
The island's largest town is Sant Francesc Xavier, the only town hall, the main building is the fortified church of St. Frances Xavier, built in 1726.
In the village there is also the chapel of Sa Tanca Velia, built in the fourteenth century, and an interesting Museu Ethnology, and very special is the presence of what is considered the most ancient fig tree island.
