POPULATION
Portugal has a population of just over 10 million people, almost all ethnic Iberian, with minorities of African immigrants from former colonies and mestizos.
The population is concentrated in majority (75%) along the coasts and especially in urban areas: for example that only has 4 million inhabitants Lisbon and Porto has a population of 2.
Mountain areas are almost deserted, while the northern regions have fueled massive emigration to Europe rather than more industrialized.
In the last decade of the 90 has significantly improved the standard of living, so life expectancy is 73 years for men and 80 for women, while the annual growth rate of population declined from a high 1% to a much 0.1% modest.

ECONOMY
Not like the good old days of Manuel I the Great, but until the sixties of the twentieth century, the economic balance of Portugal has been secured from the colonies.
The increased revenue came from oil, diamonds, mineral resources, the tropical fruit and port charges of Angola, Mozambique, Zaire and Zambia, supported by revenues from tourism and remittances from the settlers.
Towards the end of that decade, however, resources for the faded colonial guerrilla war ravaged Angola and Mozambique and the little that was left was just enough to keep the huge military apparatus to counter the guerrillas.
The recognition of the independence of African colonies did not deprive the country of a significant part of its resources, but also a loss has already been sanctioned by time, with the aggravating circumstance of having to maintain a military system definitely oversized for Portugal only.
In this situation we tried to cope with industrialization, with the growth of tourism and migration.
Over 3 million Portuguese who went to work abroad especially in France.
The economic landscape has definitely improved with the arrival of the country in the European Community and especially in the last decade, around 1990 which saw annual per capita income more than triples approaching that of Spain.
The majority of the workforce is employed in the service sector, which is then in the economy of the country.
Outstanding importance for tourism and the services it provides

AGRICULTURE AND FARMING
About 25% of the land is cultivated, 6% is devoted to pasture and 40% is covered by forests and woodlands: the rest is unproductive
The primary sector employs 10% of workforce
Main crops are cereals, grapes, olives and cork of which Portugal is the largest exporter in the north are cultivated mainly vegetables, vines and fruit trees in the center is dominated by vineyards, corn fields and rice paddies and the south is the granary of the country, even with the significant production of olive and cork
Eucalyptus, pine and locust are most of the forests.
They breed mainly chickens, cattle, sheep and pigs.

FISHING
Significant resource, especially for coastal North is fishing for sardines, anchovies, tuna and cod. Developed is the production of oysters.
Important is the production of sea salt.

INDUSTRY
The industrial sector is mainly supported by foreign investment which have started to arrive after the entry of Portugal into the European Community.
The industry employs 30% of the population and is mainly based on oil refining, shipbuilding, shoe, textile, chemical, steel, canning. The production of electricity is ensured by an extensive network of dams.
Exploitation of mineral resources is not negligible (tungsten, iron, uranium) is low.
