CASCAIS - CABO DE ROCHA - SINTRA - OBIODOS

Just off the coast of Cascais is made mainly high and jagged, broken by stretches of low and lush pine forests that reach to the shore or sandy dunes and moved by that recall African landscapes.
This was followed by spectacular landscapes, such as Boca do Inferno, a deep gorge of red rocks on which crashing waves of the Atlantic, and the famous Guincho beach, well known by surfers.

Sintra is pleasant, with cafes, small restaurants, small shops and restored pastel mansions that line the steep streets of the historic center, or surround romantic squares. Sintra is the real city, popular destination even for local tourism, towards the Palace of Vila, the turreted castle of the Moors, the wacky Palacio da Pena.

MORI OF CASTLE
From the eighth century dominates the town from a ridge of the Serra de Sintra, four and a half kilometers from downtown.
It was retaken by the Arabs in 1147, after several failed attempts by King Afonso Henriques, who erected the first Christian chapel dedicated to Sao Pedro de Penaferrim.
Abandoned for centuries, retains the single turreted medieval walls that King Ferdinand II wanted to romantically restored in 1860, including contributing to the park surrounding the castle and the monument giving a new dignity.

PENA PALACE
At 300 meters from the castle, the woods, in the early nineteenth century there were the ruins of a sixteenth century convent.
The environment attracted the attention of Prince Ferdinand of Saxe, husband of Queen Mary II. In full romantic era, the king acquired the area, promoted the restoration of the convent and in 1840 started the construction of what, according to his intentions, should have been the "Ideal Palace", nestled up the newly National Park .
Ferdinand personally oversaw the heavy decoration of the building according to the tastes of the time.
The work was discontinued at the death of Queen Mary in 1853 and were resumed only when the king convoluted second marriage in 1869 and the end result that we see today, was an imposing building that has a mix of styles and effects Disney not a little kitsch.
Her successor, King Charles I with his wife Queen Amelia spent long periods here, especially in the two years preceding the fall of the monarchy and the departure for exile in 1910.
Since 1912 the palace and museum offers visitors the royal apartments rather surprising for the size of small rooms with low ceilings and the simplicity of the furnishings, including chinoiserie Jugenstil and ornaments.
The palace, surrounded by a large private park, sits atop a steep hill. An internal bus helps to overcome the 300-meter
steep slope between the entrance of the park (where the ticket) and the palace, not to start the visit with the breath.
