S.CRISTOBAL CATHEDRAL
The Cathedral of San Cristobal is home to the most interesting and rich example of ecclesiastical baroque architecture of the island and is completed on the other three sides by harmonious and elegant buildings, all built in the second half of the eighteenth century. The square has been restored in the thirties under the direction urbanist Cuban Luis Bay Sevilla. The cathedral was begun by the Jesuits, who occupied the nearby oratory of San Ignacio, dedicated to the founder of the order, in 1748. The troubled relationship with the secular authorities who accused them of fomenting hatred and revolt among the slaves cost the fathers of the Jesuit expulsion from the island in 1767. The completion of the cathedral to the Franciscans so touched that ended in 1777. Initially dedicated to the Virgin Mary Immaculate Conception was then popularly known as Catedral de San Cristobal in memory of the Genoese navigator, whose remains preunte stayed in the cathedral from 1796 to 1898, as remembered by a plaque. Almost square, 35 x 34 m with two asymmetrical bell towers.
Near the Cathedral, a famous local La Bodeguita del Medio.

Every night at 21, according to tradition, a group of costumed soldiers fire a shot with the cannon, in memory of the times in which served as a signal to close the gates of the city and authorize the chain of barrier to the access channel to the bay.
The Morro Castle was designed by an Italian military engineer Battista Antonelli in 1610. The two fortresses rise on the two opposite points that mark the entrance of the access channel to the bay. Morro fortress was besieged by the British for 44 days in 1762 and had to give in to the fleet of Sir George Pocock. In 1958 the canal was dug in a tunnel of 700 meters to the dual carriageway that connects the two sides.
